Spectrum

Color: creamsicle (orange + white)

(My blog can be found here: http://amixedreality.tumblr.com/)

The story takes place in a large city surrounded by endless water on all sides. The time setting is somewhat futuristic, but not TOO far ahead- perhaps around 2035 or so. Technology is advanced, as is expected; some examples include wall-based touch/voice activate computers, earrings that double as headsets (like a Bluetooth), most transportation is via mag-lev trains, etc.

People’s physical and mental strengths and weaknesses are able to be determined before birth- so before a person is born his parents already know he’ll have an aptitude for math and logic, but will have a low stamina when it comes to physical things such as running or strength. This can then, when they are of age, be used to assign him or her a job best suited to his strengths, so that the city’s society can function as smooth as possible (like cogs in a machine).

Furthermore, romance has also been simplified- at the age of sixteen, a person is matched to another sixteen-year-old who is calculated to have the best percentage of compatibility. This is to avoid relationship incompatibility and therefore problems or trouble, to help keep negative emotions to a minimum. It’s not required (or so they say) to be with them, but most people have just accepted it as truth and go with it.

As for the city itself, it is sectioned off into various ‘shades’, from red all the way to purple. A family’s ‘color’ determines their social status, and a family can move up or down the spectrum at any time. The actual level is determined based on various factors, such as what color the family is at when born, performance at work, jobs assigned, public service, and so on- some factors are not listed but be assured, the government has eyes everywhere.

White, black, and greys do not count on the spectrum, and therefore are used to accent against the specific shade a family/part of the city is. Brown does not count as well, but only workers whose jobs require them to get dirty wear brown. The poorest people do not even have a color assigned to them.

Red and Red-Orange is low-class; Orange and Yellow are middle class. Green is Upper-Middle class, and Blues are the Upper Class. Bluish-Purple is the richest of the rich, and real Purple is only saved for Royalty and the Government.

The Polis are the security and police, and they uphold the law, apprehend anyone causing trouble, enforce policies, etc. They always wear just black when on the job.

As for actual flora/fauna, other than fish found in the waters outside the city, there are birds such as crows and pidgeons that occasionally fly overhead. Organic life can be found in parks and planters along the sidewalks, but even this is maintained and kept confined in this futuristic city.

(That’s all I got for setting, I have a few ideas for characters but nothing concrete yet. It’s not the most original idea, but I really like what I have so far I guess. Was considering doing a few sketches, but no time- thank you college.) (I did this in the right format, yes?)
