Not So Bad After All

Thomas realized that he should be happy for his big sis. She had finally got the dream wedding she always wanted and her high school sweetheart on top of that. Seeing her radiant smile while she was trying on various dresses had been heartwarming enough, but now that the actual ceremony had taken place, he couldn’t help but feel annoyed.

It wasn’t like he didn’t know anyone that attended the party; quite the contrary. He was familiar with all of his sisters friends and classmates. But maybe that was what was bothering him; sure, he knew them, but it wasn’t like he was friends with any of them.

So there he stood, picking at the cold buffet without really eating anything, drink in hand and grumbling under his breath.

The fact that the former high school orchestra had been chosen to play wasn’t helping his mood in the slightest. He hated the sickeningly-sweet melodies of the violins. It reminded him of too many sappy romance movies and the thought alone made him gag.

“God, I wish I could go home.” he muttered.

“What was that?” Oh no. Nonono this wasn’t happening, it couldn’t be the most obnoxious guy of the bunch that was talking to him now.

“Get lost, Ian.” Yeah, it was totally that-one-douche-bag-that-had-always-hit-on-his-sis and also guy-that-was-really-annoying-whenever-he-opened-his-mouth. Why did he have to be here?

“Go away and go cry in a corner now that my sis is forever unobtainable.” The other was chuckling and leaning on the table with one hand.

“I’m sorry to disappoint, but I got over my crush on her years ago.” He glanced over and saw Thomas staring at him disbelievingly. “What?”

“I don’t believe you.” Thomas huffed. “You’ve been flirting with her constantly even when you knew that she was gonna marry Markus.”

“No, that was just me being me.” was the reply. Thomas looked up when he realized that his drink had been taken right out of his hand without him noticing. Predictably, Ian was sipping on it, still in that same stupid pose that was supposed to look cool but to Thomas it looked like the guy was going to fall over any second now.

“Oh you goddamn fucker, that’s it. You always pull this shit, I’m so sick of this!”

He took a swing in the general direction of that damn smug grin that now looked kind of shocked. Sadly his fist didn’t connect with his face like he intended, but he still got the satisfaction of punching a guy square in the chest. Trying to go in for another hit, he was stopped be a hand at his wrist. Somehow, even though that guy was doubled over and breathing heavily, he still managed to deflect his next blow. Even worse, Ian was now looking up from his hunched over position and smirking like this was a ll a joke.

“You really want to do this? You do know I’m older and stronger than you?”

“You wish.” Thomas grunted out between grit teeth. The reply he got was a low chuckle.

“Well, only one way to know for sure.” And then they almost toppled over the tables as Ian lunged at him. They would have succeeded if it weren’t for the lovely bride that had stormed over and now ripped the two of them off of each other by their ears.

“Really guys, I’m tired of this. I think it’s about time we help you, because it seems to me that you’re going to grow old and die before figuring this out.” She mentioned over to the orchestra that had stopped playing. Everyone in the room was staring intently at the three standing by the buffet.

“Sis, what do you-” Thomas started to stammer but stopped when the violin player walked over to them with a shit eating grin on his face. He posed between the two that had been fighting and were now standing across from each other, shifting uncomfortably.

Then he began to play.

It was the Wedding March by Wagner.

Thomas just kept looking from his sister to Ian, who was gradually turning red from ear to ear, to the guy playing.

“Are you kidding m-” Before he could finish his sentence, the entire orchestra joined in and then the whole thing ended with a flourish by the violinist.

Everyone cheered and clapped while Thomas stood dumbfounded frozen to his spot, disbelief washing over him. He noted that Ian was trying to sneak away, but sadly everyone’s attention was on the two of them. It didn’t really hit him what was happening until his sister shouted “And now kiss already!” which was met with even more cheers.

Thomas was looking around the room. His dad was giving him the thumbs up. His mom was happily crying into her tissue like she had during the actual wedding ceremony.

And Ian was looking like he was going to pass out any moment from embarrassment.

Oh…’ Thomas thought to himself. ‘That’s why he always hung around with my sis?’

A part of him was trying to figure out what to do about that brand new information, while another part, still on edge from all the adrenaline, took over. So before Ian could start hyperventilating, he grabbed him by the collar of his dress shirt that was horribly wrinkled from the scuffle and kissed him square on the mouth.

The best part was when Ian kissed back and Thomas realized he had now a way to shut him up whenever he got too annoying.

‘This might not be so bad after all.’ He thought to himself and just went with it.
